A Kindergarten Update 4 1/2 weeks in

So, after the first week, we really go into the swing of things. Here are a few fun facts I want to remember:

  • He is awake by 6:45 and we leave about 7:25 to get to school. We realized the shorter amount of time, the better right now. He dresses, brushes teeth and eats and we head off to school.
  • After a few days of not staying for Morning Assembly, he really wanted me to come and promised not to cry so I went back and since then, we've had no problems. The truth is that he is so happy to be at school so there is nothing for him to be upset over. And, I love walking him into the gym holding his little hand (although that is starting to change) and watching him do the pledge or sway back and forth during the class song (like the Aggies) or raise his hand to answer a question from a 4Her or whatever. Every kid in school is in this gym, but he feels totally comfortable.
  • Every day, so far, he tells me what he did at school. I always ask him about lunch, Camp (Computer, Art, Music are on a rotation and then PE that occurs every day), writers workshop, what books they read, if they did any science experiments, recess, friends, etc. and he always happily answers my questions.
  • At two weeks into school, they let parents start coming to eat with their kids at lunch. He has been begging us to do this, so yesterday, Everly and I ate lunch with him. He was SO excited!
  • He is constantly asking when he can be a "walker" or a "bus rider". Currently, he goes with the "car riders" so I can pick him up in the car line each day. But, I have told him he can be a "walker" when it cools off and I will park, get the girls out and let them all play on the playground before we head home. But, we live too close for him to be a bus rider, so sadly he won't do that for a few years.  I'm extra excited for his first field trip though; he just can't wait to ride that school bus!
  • He tells us every day who "made bad choices"! ha! It's so funny; it's not really to tattle, but it's something he notices. One day he even told us one kids full name and when we asked him how he knew his full name, he said his teacher called this kid his full name because he made bad choices! haha!
  • He LOVES computer lab, art, music and P.E. However, yesterday he was too funny when he told me that for PE, they had the option to "run one more lap or just quit" and he decided "to just quit" because he was so tired!
  • Since a couple of days into Kindergarten, he has come home wanting to draw pictures. And in the last 4 weeks and 2 days, he has become obsessed with drawing all the time; he likes to draw Star Wars ships and blasters and guns, but he also likes to draw people and wants us to each him how to draw shirts or pants and then he goes on to include suns and cloud and grass in his pictures and anything he thinks of to draw, he does. He loves to get out his "art supplies" and even stored them very nicely in the play kitchen when he put them away one day. He also wants to write when he draws. He wants to know how to spell words and write them and I'm so impressed!
  • It's also impressive how much Kindergartners know before they go to Kindergarten. I mean, they are not learning the letter A as much as building on what they already know. His teacher has them writing lots of things, although they may not be focusing on those letters yet.  They have about a dozen letters they are learning this month. And he sounds out letters well. I do find it funny though; the other day he wanted to write the word "drawing" and I asked him what it started with. He told me "G". The way he says the word, it does come out sounding like a G. So, it's funny to see and hear things through his ears and eyes. He also came home yesterday singing "Every letter makes a sound; T-H-E spells the!" and was happy to know how to spell "The". It's just impressive how smart kids are and how fast he is learning.
  • He has lots of friends so far. He talks mostly about the boys in his class - Greer, Charlie, Tommy, John but also talks about the girls. Yesterday, he came home telling me he met a new friend in his class named Cindy. And, when I showed him a few pictures on his teacher's facebook page, he loved pointing every kid out to tell me who was who.
  • He also loves that he sees friends from other classes (Luc, Rudi) during Rececss or Camp or Lunch.
  • Also, while he at first wanted me to hold his hand and go with him in the mornings, these last couple of days, he doesn't need my hand (and probably doesn't need me to walk him in but I don't want to ask because I love it!) and when I leave the gym after morning assembly, he doesn't look over to wave bye! :( Before this, he always did both of those things. He would constantly blow me kisses or wave or give thumbs ups. I don't think he is embarrassed (yet!) like I hear other moms tell me will happen; I think so far he is just so excited to see what is happening around him and he doesn't need that reassurance from me. And that is ok.
  • He was THRILLED to get his Pebble Creek Panther t-shirt yesterday. And he wanted to wear it right away, but they have to wear them on Thursday for Spirit Day so he has to wait. He loves telling us he is a panther and goes to Pebble Creek.
  • As far Grace, she talks constantly about being in Kindergarten when she is 5 and being in Mrs. Downs class and she will tell me she loves Mrs. Downs or needs to talk to her (although she hasn't yet). She also will say funny things when Atticus crawls into the car during after school pickup like "there's my boy!" or "there's our Atticus!" copying what I say. And finally, the cutest thing she says is the way she pronounces Pebble Creek: "Pebble Cweep." She seriously talks nonstop anyways, but when she gets going about Atticus and his school, its so cute to hear Pebble Cweep over and over in her conversation.

On Grace's first day of Preschool, she was up and dressed with Atticus so she wanted to go with us to Morning Assembly. Atticus was so proud to show her his school and wanted their picture made indoors.
Some of his first drawings during week 2.
