A Hill Country Christmas

This past weekend we were so excited to take Atticus and Grace to San Antonio to the JW Marriott for their Hill Country Christmas! Our friends Mandee and Derek secured a great deal for us all and we met them on Friday night with their two little ones Beck and Ben. Beck is 2 1/2 and Ben just turned 1. After hearing Mandee use the term, we told Atticus all week long that we were going to the North Pole this weekend! So, he kept telling me we would see the elves, the reindeer, and Santa Taus at the Norf pole. He was excited too!

We drove through rain and cold, misty weather all the way to the resort. When we arrived, we first went to Santa's Workshop where the kids stuffed their own stuffed animals. Honestly, Atticus was more interested in picking up tons of stuffing from the large bucket and just throwing it in the air. I think he learned this trick from Ana....she is always showing the kids how fun things like tissue paper are to throw in the air! haha! But, eventually his Gingerbread Man was stuffed and Beck's Reindeer was stuffed and we were on our way. We walked around the resort and it was just beautiful! Christmas trees, poinsettias, garland, Christmas ornaments, wreaths, and lights were everywhere, inside and outside. There were large fireplaces inside and outside as well. We walked outside while it was still kind of misting and let the kids play in Santa's sleigh and then eventually settled outside as the mist stopped. We sat in front of a beautiful and warm fireplace and let the bigger kids run and play while the littler ones crawled around. At exactly 6:30, the JW Holiday Illumination began with music and a light show. The entire outside was lit up and played to Christmas songs every 30 minutes or so. It would probably play for 10 minutes before stopping. Atticus LOVED it! He danced and danced. Eventually, we ate a delicious buffet dinner of buttermilk fried chicken, mashed potatoes, creamed corn and more at Cibolo Moon, inside the hotel, before retiring to the room to rest up for our fun-filled day we were expecting on Saturday.

At 8:30 on Saturday morning, we went to Breakfast with Santa. It was basically a delicious breakfast buffet in the restaurant 18 Oaks at the resort, but the kids could have unlimited one-on-one time with Santa and Mrs. Claus. This was good that we had multiple chances for the kids to talk to them, because Atticus froze up immediately upon arrival. It took a second time to convince him to sit on his lap and I had to lead the conversation. But, as soon as we left, Atticus immediately said "I need to see Santa Taus adin!". Grace also sat on Santa's lap but as soon as she did, she immediately began to cry. I was very excited for this morning because this was Atticus' first time to ever meet Santa Claus. I just haven't taken him in the past because he didn't really understand about Santa yet. And, let me tell you - this Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus were extraordinary! Their costumes were so detailed and nice and everything about them was real. I could just picture Mrs. Claus baking cookies for Santa and the elves up at the North Pole! I was extremely impressed! Of course, we all know that the real Santa is at the North Pole getting ready for Christmas Eve and this is just one of his many friends helping him out. But, his friends were pretty impressive!

During breakfast, the kids were also given balloon animals - Atticus' favorite! And Atticus ate 5 bowls of blueberries with whipped topping. Thankfully, Vic got the joy of changing that diaper later. After that, we spent most of the morning letting the kids play inside the hotel and walked around to some of the other things going on. There was a dinosaur display and someone talking about them and we went outside some more. There were some things we skipped because the kids were too young, but one day they can do those things too (making gingerbread houses, painting, ornament making). Instead, they played with their balloon animals until one of them got stuck up in the tree and the other two eventually popped. It was just very laid-back and the resort had so many places to lounge and we never felt crowded or unable to let the kids play. We had lunch at the hotel sports bar and then Atticus and Beck wrote their letter to Santa Claus and dropped it into the mailbox for the North Pole. Atticus hasn't really had true list for Santa this year. But, everytime we ask him what he wants, he will say "Jessie" which I assume means Jessie from Toy Story. I hope Santa gets that message. Then, we all took naps and woke up to head down to make s'mores at the fire pit. Atticus had two helpings of s'mores, although he wouldn't put his marshmallows in the fire. The first s'more was perfect and warm and delicious and while he took forever to eat it, he loved it. The next one didn't sit in the fire long enough and was more like a deconstructed s'more. He ate the marshmallows, then the chocolate, and then the graham crackers. But, he does love s'mores! It was a lot colder on this afternoon, although the weather all day was beautiful and sunny. The boys got giant glow sticks right as it got dark and played the rest of the night with those and during the next Illumination Light Show. It was spectacular again and we loved seeing all of the lights - me and Vic included! On this night, there was live music inside the hotel -- two guys singing and playing guitars to country music songs. We visited and listened while the kids danced and played. The nice thing about this entire experience was that most families had kids who were about 8 and under. So, it was a very safe, family atmosphere with lots of moms and dads and kiddos and it just made it very homey and fun! We ate dinner at the sports bar again while catching the Heisman presentation. Then, we headed upstairs to put kids into pajamas because Santa's elves were coming to tuck them into bed! Well, Santa's elves were running a little bit late. They showed up about 30 minutes late at 10:30, which was fine except Grace was EXHAUSTED! She fell asleep in my arms for a few minutes, which she rarely does anymore, until they arrived. Atticus kept asking where the elves were but then froze up again and didn't talk when they got there. They brought to each Atticus and Grace, Sparkle the cow, that would tell Santa if they were being good or bad and they told Atticus it was very important that he go to bed immediately and be a good boy. He liked it ok, but didn't really know what to do. It was still fun though!

First thing the next morning, Atticus found a letter from Santa that had been slid under the door. He was responding to Atticus' letter he sent to Santa the day before. Beck got one too, but the funny part is that Derek said he also got a letter slid under the door addressed to him: in the form of a bill for their weekend! ha! While the Powells decided to get on the road, we stayed for the morning to let Atticus decorate a rubber ducky and enter it into the rubber ducky race. It is setup so that the kids get a numbered ducky and they use magic markers to color it and decorate. Then, all of the duckys go into a big basket and one of the hotel employees takes them down to the end of the lazy river and drops them into the water. The ducks float down to the big finish line and prizes are awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and then a prize to the last place duck, also known as the Slowpoke award. It's all just for fun and there is no skill involved. We decorated ducks for both kids and then Atticus and I walked around the pool area picking up acorns (very important task for Atticus - he was completely occupied finding every last one to throw off of the concrete and into the grass!) while Grace took her morning nap in Vic's arms. Finally, the race was about to begin. The ducks were dumped in and we cheered them on with Atticus throwing his little fists into the air and saying "Dough duckys!" over and over. Adorable. They get to the end and get scooped up and it's over. They bring them over and give out the awards. We are waiting just to get our rubber ducky back (I mean, Atticus definitely needs that duck to add to his ever growing collection!) when they announce the slowpoke award. And....ATTICUS WON! His little ducky got stuck and was very last place. It was just too funny because there were about 50 ducks in that water and he just got lucky! And do you know what is so pathetic on my part? I was so close to tearing up after taking him up to get his prize. Why in the world would I tear up over something like that? I have no idea except I was just so proud of him for winning and getting a prize...even if it was last place! How in the world am I going to handle the next 16 years of school contests, 4H banquets, and stock shows? I am going to be a constantly proud, tear-filled, mess!

After that, we had to load up to head home. But, it was just such a fun weekend! We love spending time with Derek, Mandee, Beck and Ben. Atticus and Beck get along so well - both laid-back and easy going (well except for the fact that they are toddlers who still have occasional meltdowns). But, they were so well behaved all weekend! And Ben and Grace were perfect angels as well going with the flow and being adorable. And Mandee and Derek like to vacation the way we do - easy going, fun food and drinks, and our kids in tow. We do tend to remember the days before kids and realize how much our lives, conversations, and bedtimes have changed. But, we are so thankful to have them as such good friends who we plan to still vacation with when we are all 75 years old!

It was also such a fun way to spend a weekend in December for the Christmas season. Atticus' only disappointment was that he didn't see any reindeer. He really thought he was going to see some real ones and asked about them a lot. And, while Beck and Atticus and Grace and Ben won't remember the details of this trip, I will remember everything! It was a very special weekend!

Grace: 9 months

Grace is 9 months old today! It really is surprising to me because at this time with Atticus, we were already past his first Christmas and he was bigger than she was. So, it is going by very quickly for me!

  • Weight: 17 lbs, 7 oz. (So at 8 months I was wrong on her weight; Our scale is not too accurate) - She is in the 39th percentile - still so petite!
  • Height: 27 1/2 inches (47th percentile)
  • Head Circumference is not usually too important to me, btu I thought it was funny because it is in the 77th percentile. Vic says she gets that from him; he has always thought he has a big head.
  • Still in size 3 diapers.
  • Finally in 9 month clothes!
  • She is getting a good little head of hair. It is much darker than Atticus' but I wouldn't call it brown. Poor thing may end up with just dark blonde hair like me.
  • Still crawling, pulling up and standing for seconds at a time.
  • Still clapping, waving, and bouncing to the beat of music.
  • Still takes her paci at night and naptimes and out and about when I need her to be happy.
  • Morning and afternoon naps are still normal at 1.5 hours in the morning and 2.5 in the afternoon.
  • Her nighttime sleeping is getting better. For the past 2 weeks, she has mostly slept through the night only getting up a couple of times. I think she is moving more and getting more worn out during the day which helps her sleep well. Plus, she is healthy and doesn't have a cold that is keeping her up like she did a month ago.
  • Saying "mamamamama" and "dadadadadada" and then just yelling. Usually when Atticus roars or yells loud, she copies him.
  • Has just started getting 5 more teeth in the past week. This will give her a total of 8 - 4 on bottom and 4 on top. She hasn't really been fussy except right when the first top one was poking through.
  • She has had a double ear infection this past month after a few days of fever.
  • She is still trying new foods although she is leaving her fruit on the tray lately. I have to start making her eat cheerios more than puffs though. She scarfs those up so quickly!
  • She has started taking a sippy cup.
  • She has recently become very interested in toys and especially Atticus' toys. He doesn't always care unless he is setting up his animals or working on his lego train and then if she takes a toy, he gets mad at her. Everything goes in her mouth. This week she has taken to her little doll and paying more attention to it and playing. I love this because I can't wait until she plays with dolls!
  • Lately, I have gotten back in the habit of reading to her while I read Atticus his stories before his naptime. She likes looking at the books a little. However, her new game is while we are sitting on his bed. She will sit up and then just crash head first into his pillow and just laugh! Then, of course, Atticus does the same thing and they both laugh. Then she sits up and then crashes down again. It is too funny because as soon as she is on the bed, that is what she wants to do.
  • She has learned to kiss us. If you get her in the right moment and tell her to kiss you, she will look right into your eyes and open her mouth and dive towards you. It is the most precious little drool-ey kiss!
  • She loves bathtime, as long as she is nice and full of her dinner first. She will sit right at the faucet while the water runs and put her hands under the running water and play.
  • She is just so little and petite and cute! She just fits perfectly on my hip and still in my arms if she will let me nurse her to sleep or rock her to sleep. My love grows for her every day!

Grace's Smile

Grace has started posing and smiling when I take pictures. At first, I thought she would just squint and blink when the flash went off but now before I even take the picture or even when it doesn't flash, she gives her big "smile". It is adorable. I remember Atticus doing this same thing. She will open her mouth and squint her eyes and just cheese it! Here's an example from this morning:

Conversations

We hosted a play date at our house with our new friends, Sarah and her kids Austin and Aubrey. During lunch, Austin did something that caused Sarah to tell him that I also had a "spanking spoon" that she could use if needed. This refers to the wooden spoon that I have begun to threaten Atticus with when we've hit our last straw. I've rarely had to use it, but as soon as I pull it out in sight, it does it's job of putting Atticus back in line. Anyways, here is the conversation:

Sarah (friend): something to the effect of: "Sarah also has a spanking spoon here at her house."
Atticus: "Just yike you mommy! You have a wooden poon".
Me: "That's right and if you do not act nice, I might have to use it."
Atticus: "Mommy, you have a knife!" and goes back to eating as if these two items are the same.
Me to Sarah: "I promise I do not discipline my kids with a knife." as she laughs and laughs.

Thank you, Atticus, for insinuating that discipline with a wooden spoon and a knife are the same!

At the doctors office this week, we were reading a book about the human body. It gets to one page where it shows a picture of the brain.

Me: "This is a picture of a brain that is inside your head."
Atticus: "I want to see it. Open it mommy."
Me: "Oh no, we can't open your head to see your brain."
Atticus: "You don't have your scissors mommy." as if this is the reason we cannot open his head.
Me: "Oh Atticus we don't use scissors on people's heads."
Atticus: "It might hurt me."

Whew - at least he knows that pain is involved with scissors and heads. Maybe we will hide that book at the doctors office next time...

A few of his recent phrases include "No, thank you." and "excuse me". Both of these are great! I think it just means that sometimes the things we tell him to say over and over finally sink in! Sometimes he does them without being prompted!

Cookie Decorating

Today we had a play date with Austin, Aubrey and their mama Sarah. I am really enjoying time with them! Our kids are so close in age and both of hers are just the cutest! I have so many wonderful mommy friends and I love spending time with each of them and love that my kids have such good little friends as well. So, today, we got together to decorate Christmas Cookies. I baked up some sugar cookies, bought squeezable icing and used some Valentine sprinkles - hey, they are red! and let the kids go to town. It was really fun and I think they had a good time!

Christmas Fun in College Station

So, every year that we've had kids (all of three), we have wanted to do some of the local Christmas activities here in Bryan/College Station. But, we tend to get caught up with traveling and other to-do's and just haven't gotten to them. I realize that our kids won't remember them much now, but it's for me and Vic to share with them and remember. So, this past weekend we did lots of things here in town.

Friday night, when Vic got home, we loaded up the family and headed to the Traditions Club in Bryan to see the Guinness Book Record Holder Gingerbread House that was supposed to be the largest one every built. It should have been super cool - a house made of gingerbread and candy? But..it was a total bust. First, it is like 31 degrees with just enough wind to make it cold. I had us all bundled up, but it was just cold! We got out, made our way up to buy our tickets and while doing that, noticed that it was covered in plastic. Vic mentioned that it must be because of the weather (possible snow/ice/sleet) and that maybe they wanted to protect the outside of it as much as possible. No big deal though - it would still be fun to see the inside. We get our tickets ($8 total) and they offer us some gingerbread cookies and hot chocolate. Of course, Atticus wants a cookie and since it's free- no problem. So, we grab it and start to leave and they say "That will be $2 for the cookies." Oops - so we awkwardly gave them our two dollars and headed towards the house. We walk inside and see...wood. It is just wood on the inside. No candy - no gingerbread. Just plywood or 2x4's or whatever. Wood. There is a little Christmas tree and train in the corner and some pictures of gingerbread men that kids have colored on the walls. There is Santa Claus, but you have to pay $10 to take a picture with your own camera or buy one from them. We are sort of confused and wondering if we are supposed to be impressed. We slowly realize that this is it. The gingerbread part that is so exciting is on the outside...covered in plastic. It was kind of funny but kind of irritating. I mean - we were the ones that brought out two little ones to see this in the cold, wintry weather. But they could have at least put something on the website or not charged us or something! But, it's no big deal and we head out laughing. They have a little train going around and we decide that we should at least ride it with Atticus. Well, first of all - it cost another $5. And Grace wasn't enjoying the cold windy weather. So, Atticus and Vic headed to get their tickets and Grace and I headed to the car. They rode the train, came back freezing, loaded up and we all headed to eat some tacos for dinner. In the end, it was hilarious! But, we tried to quickly tell others we knew not to waste their time. The good thing is that it all went to charity, but that is not something we will ever look into doing again!
The next day, I ran up to the Brazos Center for the Christmas craft show and then that afternoon, we met our photographer at the MSC on campus for family pictures. We already had to move them from outside in downtown Bryan - too cold! It was about 36 degrees about 4pm that afternoon. We took our family pictures and then decided to try out Christmas at the Creek at Wolf Pen Creek. Honestly - had the weather not been so cold and ending the evening with light sleet/rain, I can see this being an awesome event! The weather really was fine - not windy and Wolf Pen Creek offers lots of areas to block the wind. We walked up (by the way - everything here is mostly free!) and they gave Atticus and Grace some little Christmas toys. We walked on in and everything is lit up and the stage has some entertainment happening. Across the entire wolf pen area, there is a giant bouncy house type of slide, a train, some shopping and eating vendors, a synthetic ice rink, a Live Nativity, a place to create Christmas crafts, a giant movie shown, etc. You can bring chairs or blankets and your own food or drink. Oh and of course, there is a petting zoo. The petting zoo is really what we went to see. Prior to pictures at the MSC, we decided that if Atticus behaved, we would reward him with the petting zoo. His love for animals trumps everything in life, so this was the perfect reward. The only problem was that at the park, all of the events were so spread out, it took us forever to walk and find the petting zoo. Plus, the weather was getting more windy and wet and because of that, some of the events were not happening. We FINALLY found the petting zoo and Atticus was so cute looking at the goats and the camel and kangaroo and zebra and sheep. He loved them as always and was so good telling each of them "bye" when it was time to go. I would have felt so terrible if it had not been there due to weather because this little boy loves his animals! And Grace was just as well behaved as always. I put her in her snowbunny suit and wrapped blankets around her in the stroller. She was snug as a bug and toasty warm! Anyways, it was a good attempt although in the future we will just know that unless the weather is ideal, it may not be something we want to do. We went home and Vic made some delicious Shrimp Etoufee to warm our tummies while we watched Frosty the Snowman. It was still a fun family outing!
Finally, on Sunday, after Church, we attended the BCS Christmas Parade. We went with our friends, Chris and Katherine and our friends Russell and Sarah with their kids Austin (3) and Aubrey (9 months). We stood on University Drive right on campus and watched the parade go by. It was so much fun! It wasn't too terribly cold or windy and Austin and Atticus really got into waving and looking at the floats and getting candy! The funny thing was that most people gave out candy canes. Atticus tried one and decided he didn't like it, but Vic loves candy canes and truly stockpiled Atticus' loot for himself! Grace mostly hung out in Katherine's arms totally content. Then, after the parade, we all headed to a new restaurant on Northgate called Blackwater Draw that brews it's on beer. We ate dinner, all 10 of us, and visited and had the BEST time! It was a perfect ending to a really fun weekend!

Puppy Chow

Today, we made our first Christmas season treat. Every year, before I was married, we would have Erwin Baking Day at Melbo & GG's. This consisted of making lots of candies and treats that we would give to friends, family, teachers, etc. and then of course, eat during the month of December. A few recipes I remember include: million dollar fudge, divinity, buckeyes, chocolate covered pretzels, peanut patties, Texas trash, and then one of my favorites: Puppy Chow. I love it. I want to make it as soon as December starts. And I can only make it in December. I made some a different time of year one time and it just wasn't nearly as good as in December. It is also one of those really terrible treats. I mean, it is kind of messy and not super pretty so it's not always something I think is good to take to a party. But, I like to have it on hand for when I need a sweet treat. It's one of those things that you can walk by and grab a bite of without getting a fork and plate, anytime you want. The bad part is...you can walk by and grab a bite anytime without getting a fork and plate. Terrible for your waistline. Its just so delicious. And GG always taught me to look for the piece that is the most clumped up because it is the most chocolaty and tastes the best. Hmmm. Delicious!

Anyways. After I got married, I used to go nuts buying ingredients and trying to have my own personal baking days to make as much food as possible to give away and take to parties and to recreate what I grew up enjoying on our family baking days. The problem was I would get overwhelmed and end up with way more ingredients stored in the pantry and sometimes try to do way too many recipes. Last year, for the first time, I went simple. I made my favorites, attempted a new one or two and just enjoyed a little baking. The nice thing about staying home with the kiddos is that we can still do that and be stress free. Atticus loves to "cook" aka eat batter, so it is fun to bake with him.

So, today, we made Puppy Chow. Atticus keeps calling it Chex Mix or Puppy Snack, but either way he loves it too. I remember last year, giving him a bite for the first time. That was some of the first chocolate he really ever had. We already gave a bag to the neighbors and I've already found lots of clumpy chocolaty pieces. So, day one of baking has been a success!
