Conversations

We hosted a play date at our house with our new friends, Sarah and her kids Austin and Aubrey. During lunch, Austin did something that caused Sarah to tell him that I also had a "spanking spoon" that she could use if needed. This refers to the wooden spoon that I have begun to threaten Atticus with when we've hit our last straw. I've rarely had to use it, but as soon as I pull it out in sight, it does it's job of putting Atticus back in line. Anyways, here is the conversation:

Sarah (friend): something to the effect of: "Sarah also has a spanking spoon here at her house."
Atticus: "Just yike you mommy! You have a wooden poon".
Me: "That's right and if you do not act nice, I might have to use it."
Atticus: "Mommy, you have a knife!" and goes back to eating as if these two items are the same.
Me to Sarah: "I promise I do not discipline my kids with a knife." as she laughs and laughs.

Thank you, Atticus, for insinuating that discipline with a wooden spoon and a knife are the same!

At the doctors office this week, we were reading a book about the human body. It gets to one page where it shows a picture of the brain.

Me: "This is a picture of a brain that is inside your head."
Atticus: "I want to see it. Open it mommy."
Me: "Oh no, we can't open your head to see your brain."
Atticus: "You don't have your scissors mommy." as if this is the reason we cannot open his head.
Me: "Oh Atticus we don't use scissors on people's heads."
Atticus: "It might hurt me."

Whew - at least he knows that pain is involved with scissors and heads. Maybe we will hide that book at the doctors office next time...

A few of his recent phrases include "No, thank you." and "excuse me". Both of these are great! I think it just means that sometimes the things we tell him to say over and over finally sink in! Sometimes he does them without being prompted!
